This post is a little late responce but I do understand that you cant get a 4ohm load with 2 4ohm dvc's, I was just speaking genericly and didn't feel like explaining everything. I have been installing dvc subs in cars for a while.

Talk to the engineer at Eminence! He is one of the people on my side I even got the techie at JL to agree with what I was saying!

I will talk to (or have my budy relay the message) to Jerry at Eminence. I'll see what he as to say. Shorting the coil, is one thing. How many "friends that are good with electronics" are going to that though.....

The obvious thing here is why would you do it......If it was acceptable and would have no effects on the woofer (it does effect the woofers peformance/spec) manufactures would pump out dvc's all day long.....

skatrcj-"I do understand that you cant get a 4ohm load with 2 4ohm dvc's,"

you can get a single 4 ohm mono load out of two DvC 4 ohm speakers. You could either series the woofers, then parrallel them together (8ohm/2 = 4) or you could parallel each and then seies them (yeilds 4 ohm too)

The main concern I can see with this approach is the people sending 500 watts to a single VC of a 500w DVC sub. This poses the biggest threat to the integrity of the speaker and is exactly why JL will not a warranty a sub used in this fashion.

bnoon,
I'm going to attempt to write a very clear response to all of the issues. Be back a little later.

Knu,

If you get a chance, look at the speakers I posted in the off topic forum. They were built by a member of the bass list and I'm pretty impressed with the results.

Hi all,

Dave (dnewma04) asked me to pop in and add to this thread...

Basically, running a single voice coil of a DVC driver will not damage the driver in any way, shape or form. It will change some of the T/S parameters (Qes and Re, and potentially Qms, to be precise), but the net resulting T/S change may not affect the box design.

For information about running the DVC subs, please see our tech papers at:
http://www.adireaudio.com/Tech%20Papers/dvc_subs.htm
http://www.adireaudio.com/Tech%20Papers/rdo_operation.htm

Essentially, one can use the second "undriven" voice coil to alter the driver's T/S parameters in a predictable manner. This allows considerable flexibility, especially in IB and large sealed box installations.
