Use Kazaa or whatever you have and seach for stuff like 'THX' 'Dolby Digital' 'DTS' 'Bass test' and so on. Get the best quality you can.

When I got my new MP3 deck and speakers, I started listening to all the old mp3s I had on disc. One of them was Hotel Cali, and when it came on, my GF and I sat in the car at 3 am just to listen to how fantastic it sounded, and that was in MP3 form!

For bass, I like Fat of the Land by Prodigy (firestarter and breathe, among others).

Metallica is good (and fuN!).

For clarity, get the remastered Kind of Blue by Miles Davis -- even if you don't like jazz, this is the one jazz album to have. Great music for relaxing or having sex. If you have sex in your car, you're one step closer.

Wow, really? I was just going to comment that you never ever want to use MP3s to test your system. You lose any imaging that was in the original recording and normally the bass gets noticeably muddier.

I'll go out on a limb here and throw in my two fav's: First)Dire Straits - On Every Street. This CD has a wide range of musical styles on it. From aucoustical guitar to low end thump. Country/Western, Rock, Jazz, Vocals...it has everything! Second) Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug. It has three or four songs on it and some of the biggest, deepest, quickest bass I have ever heard. I used that on e alot in my old Mazda MX3 (two Solo-Baric 10"). I don't dare even trying to play it in the Contour as I haven't bought subs yet (well, I have one OOOOOOLD Clarion 8" powered tube, but that's not really up to the task!) Most of Nine Inch Nails work is good for pushing the limits of your system.

Just my .02!

A friend of mine loaned me his 1988 Alpine competition CD & the musical variety on it was awesome; not only in setting up my car stereo system but just casual listening.
I also used it for auditioning Home Theater equipment, particularly speakers & subwoofers.

During my recent cross-country moving trip from Wichita (ugh!) to San Diego (woo-hoo!) one CD that really stood out on my SVT's system was the Roxy Music box set entitled "The Thrill of it All."
This collection contains four separate discs encompassing Roxy Music's career from 1974 to their unfortunate demise in 1982. The original recordings were remastered under the supervision of founding member & oh-so-suavely sophisticated front man, Brian Ferry.
Discs 3 & 4 just blew me away with their clarity, expansive sound stage & overall sonic reproduction.
Ferry's solo work, such as "Boys+Girls" & "Bete Noir" also contain some very multi-layered material that I use for listening tests.
The production values of Roxy/Ferry were simply first rate for their time.

Not to mention I've always loved these guy's music... cool

For full range: Metallica, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method (nice a clear, good bass too), Limp Bizkit and Korn (clear and lots of bass).
Just my opinions.

Hell yeah, the new cd tweekend is awesome, the first song PHD has a rolling bass wave that lasts like 2 mins.

Some stuff off the nine inch nails cd "the fragile" One of the songs on disc 2 is the only song to trip the OverCurrent protection on my amp to date, even played at a lower volume it still happens. I can't remember which song but when I do I'll post it..

-I think it's "I'm looking forward to joining"
