I just got a JBL 80.4 amp to power my front speakers and I'm trying to figure out where to mount it. I'm leaning against putting it under the passenger seat because of lack of room and fear that passengers may kick and/or spill stuff on it. So that leaves the trunk.

I was thinking of putting it vertically against the side of the right wheel well or upside-down attached to the rear deck. Also, would mounting it near my battery have any affect on it? My battery is in a custom box in the rear-right side of my trunk. I've seen others that put theirs on the seat backs, but I sometimes put 2x4's and other random stuff across the seat backs, so that's out. Anyway, help help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Paul

A simple amp rack attached to the rear deck would be nice, out of sight and wouldn't get in the way. Don't mount it upside down though.

Never mount an amp like this. Amps generate heat which must be dissipated. It can't do this when upside down. Best case scenario would be tripping the thermal protection circuits, worse case would be a fried amp.

Note: There are some amps which don't generate much heat and could operate upside down. But why risk it?

BTW, you could always suspend an amp rack from the rear deck to mount the amp to. Search the boards, lots of pics of them.

Yeah, I kinda figured the upside-down thing wouldn't work. What about the verticle idea on the wheel well in front of the battery box?

I don't see a problem with it. What do you have in mind? Are you wanting to build a "vertical amp rack" or something?

That would depend on the particular amp, wouldn't it? It is possible to design an amp with adequate cooling when it is mounted in any position. One way to do it is to add a fan. Another way is to design the amp so that convection cooling works equally well in both directions. Most amps have the heat producing components mounted in the sides (as opposed to the top or the bottom), probably for this very reason.

You must have missed this in my first post

Right now I'm thinking of either building an amp rack hanging down from the rear deck or just mounting it against the side of the trunk. I've been looking through the archives all morning trying to get an idea of what I want to do and seeing pics of everyone elses systems.
