If your goal is loud, than the 6x9s would work better for you.

so I think I've setteled on the Pioneer TS-A6975's http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-NzYid6xLEvP/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=3&g=52300&I=130TSA6975&o=M&a=0 but I want to be absolutely sure they'll fit a '98 SE with just a little drilling. Anybody have these? opinions? thanks.

Well, I have these . They look exactly the same as what you want, but are Pioneer Premiere. In fact, you may want to consider them. I got them locally for $90 a pair.

Anyway, mine fit with no problem at all in the front, you just have to drill new mounting holes. The back is a small pain. You have to grind the hole a little where the speaker support is, just needs to go lower by about 1/2 inch. Then drill new holes (I had to use some longer screws than provided, too) and you're set!

I have no clearence problems with windows or door panels, and they sound great! laugh

6x9 vs 6x8 isn't much of a difference. 6x9 is obviously a much larger selection to pick from.

I've had 5x7 and 6x8 in my car - my current 6x9's (all four doors) made a HUGE difference in the bass response of the system. Since I don't use a subwoofer, this was very important.

But, was the improvement in bass response due to the change in the size of the speaker or the change in the quality/charasteristics of the speaker?

6x9 should fit fine

Just watch your mounting depth, otherwise they will be sticking out and all ****ty looking.

It would have been a little of both. The larger cone area helps the 6x9 produce more bass, the better driver makes better quality bass.

IMO, the difference in bass response between equal quality 6x8 and 6x9 speakers is negligible.

I'd have to say that most of the difference is either through using a better speaker (better quality materials, higher power handling, higher excursion, etc...) or using a more efficient speaker (which is really noticeable when using the somewhat limited power of about 15w with an aftermarket head unit).

I'm not saying that either speaker is better or anything. I'm just trying to point out that there are other factors besides cone size, which have a lot of influence on bass response.

I've heard 6.5" drivers in decent component systems that would put many 6x9s to shame. Their only drawback is a need for massive amounts of power from an external amp to surpass the levels that 6x9s can produce off the modest power of a head unit or small amp.

I guess what I'm trying to say with all of this babbling is that larger speakers aren't the only means of producing bass. There's lots of different options out there, which is what makes car stereo so fun!!! laugh laugh

Dave, I know that you know all this stuff. Just trying to clarify my original question to anyone else following this post and wondering what in the world I'm talking about.
