Well, the 5x7's were a Infinity Kappa Component system - separate woofer, tweeter and crossover network.
The 6x8's were Pioneer 3-ways.
I'd have to say that in this case, size did matter. I understand that speaker size is not always the determining factor for the production of bass - large "Xmax" (cone travel) is one important factor, but speakers of this type are hard to find and are usually expensive and/or hard to adapt to automotive use. Anyway, I like my 6x9's, they were easy to install and reasonably priced.
