The Ipod only Plays AAC files. However, if you use iTunes, iTunes automatically converts your MP3s, WMA, etc. into AAC files.

I sync my iPod with my Mac. All files I ripped from CDs are put into MP3 format, like ssmumich stated.
Apple gave up on "Mac only / PC only" iPod builds when they came out with the third generation iPod since people were just stealing the software if they switched operating systems. When I got mine, direct from the Apple Store in Rockingham Mall, the box states "for Mac and Windows".
I believe files bought off iTMS are in AAC format for security purposes.

The iPod plays any files you have. iTunes does all NEW rips into AAC, but still supports mp3s and all other formats, but if you load a CD and import it, the new rip will be into AAC.
And the Archos is nice, but I went with the iPod because of its smaller size, and the fact that its not a USB external drive but rather a Firewire external drive, which transfers data an unbelievable amount quicker... for single CDs its not much, but when you're doing gigs at a time... whoo-boy does it make a difference.

you can go to preferences under the latest itunes software, and under importing, you can choose how you want your imported Cd's to be defaulted as (aac, mp3, etc.) so there is more flexibility with the newer software. . .
