I know this is a debatable topic, so I just wanted to throw something out there. I myself have no idea what the zetec engine really is. According to Unorthodox Racing, the zetec is an interference engine. This is stated in their pdf. instructions for installing cam gears.

If timing is way off or timing belt breaks, then valves and pistons collide and engine dies.

Oooo yeah, just cuz Terry said it's not, means it's not. I don't know whether it is or isn't, but one man's word just because he worked for ford doesn't decide it. And terry didn't design the zetec so I wouldn't take his word as the WORD on the zetec. And by that statement, it sounds like there is NO other interference engine made, which would be crazy or atleast no 2L interference engine, but I'm sure there is.

non-interference - I asked my ford service manager, who has been with the same dealership for 30 years - never steered me wrong yet.

Non interference... seen it happen first hand on a friends 95 zetec tour. belt broke while driving down the highway and nothing happened, car just stopped going. It was hauled to a shop, timing belt replaced and it's now back on the road and has been for many a thousand miles later. Not going to say this for the newer vct zetecs though as I have not personally experienced this happening w/ them.

What is the EXACT definition of interference engine? We all know the belt has broken and engines have survived, but some say the engines haven't survived, so depending on possible position of the valves when it breaks could be the deciding factor, but does that make it a non-interference, interference, or a little of both?

the resession in the pistons (the top of the piston may be indented: i.e. turbocharged engines have concave tops on the pistons), the shape of the heads and the position the valves are in are all criteria
