The Ford 'premium' head unit is the worst. At high volumes it seems to get quieter with each THUMP! POS.

What I was saying about more power was taken the wrong way. I simply stated more power has its advantages in that the more headroom you have, the better the sound of your system at all levels. More power will not kill speakers. Over-driven, small amplifiers do. Trying to get a small amplifier to put out big sound will force the amp beyond it's potential. Doing this is definitely not good for speakers. Over-driving an amplifier will heat up speakers faster than high power will. Heat is the number one killer of speakers as dnewma04 stated. The point I was trying to make was simply having more power will give you more clean power to play with. You never know when you may want to upgrade your speakers and having the power to play with would be a greater advantage for future upgrades. If you aren't concerned with future upgrades, then you could simply go with the bare minimum as discussed in prior postings. Flexibility will keep you from having to upgrade so often as your musical tastes change.
Either way, let us know what route you took. Good luck with the install.
Take care,
Ryan

RobDog117, In addition to all the recommendations made by others, some dealers you might want to check out on line are: www.soundcity.com www.sounddomain.com www.soundhabit.com All of them offer a wide variety of car audio gear at very competitive prices. Personally, I purchased most of my system from Sound City & Crutchfield, so I can highly recommend both of them.

SVT Contour- Have you ever ordered from Soundhabit.com? If so, how was your experience? I noticed that they have some great prices on several items I'm interested. Let me know.

well put ryan. your number one prob is that you bought a JVC. I think even Jensen at this point is making better head units than them. You should have went with eclipse, alpine or clarion. as far as places to buy audio, I personally have ordered from soundcity many times and their service is great. I didn't know of soundhabit but I'll check them out in a bit. Also try soundcityoutlet.com for some GREAT buys. my first head unit years back was a JVC; it skipped constantly and so did my friends. At the time I had 3 jl 10w6's, mb quarts all around and 2 soundstream amps. Don't get me wrong it sounded pretty good but I knew it should have sounded better. someone suggested buying a new head unit and recommended eclipse. So I took his advice and as it turned out, the head unit was the problem. When I installed the eclipse, instantly I noticed that every speaker in my car sounded completely different. My friends were shocked at the improvement of clarity. Even my subs sounded cleaner and tighter. It's really quite amazing what just a head unit did for my system, you would have had to hear the before and after to really appreciate this story.

Ryan,
Actually, I understood perfectly what you wrote. I just feel that putting 100 watts per channel to a pair of coax speaker could be very dangerous. When you over drive an amp, it clips, which i believe is what you were getting at. Amps clipping or sending ditortion don't kill speakers. They are oblivious to what they are playing and can't tell if the signal is distorted or not, if the distortion is caused by a VC rubbing, or some other physical problem, that can definitely kill speakers... 50 watts being sent to a pair of coaxes is definitely not a bare minimum, rather pushing the maximum. Besides, based on the rest of the sytem, it doesn't appear that he is planning on a competition system.
Vinny, JVCs QC has improved tremendously in recent years. I would consider one of their HUs but all of your suggestions were excellent.

RobDog117, Unfortunately I have no personal experience with Sound Habit so I cannot provide any information on their reliability or customer service.
However, I can tell you they are not an authorized dealer for many, if not all, the products they sell so you take the risk of having the manufacturer's warranty voided by purchasing from them.
