I could use some help in diagnosing this problem:

2000 Contour SE Sport V-6/MTX, 47,000 Miles

I get a loud high-pitched noise from the engine compartment on startup when the engine is cold (sitting for at least 4-5 hours) and wet.

The following conditions apply:
1) The noise is heard regardless of whether car is moving/in-gear or stopped/in-neutral
2) The pitch of the noise is RPM-dependent (it gets higher pitched when the revs increase)
3) The noise lasts only for a minute or two once the car is driven.
4) The noise sounds more like a whistle than a screeching, leading me to believe that it is not an accessory bearing. Howerver, I can't confirm that it is a whistle.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would suspect a worn serpentine belt. Use a long handled screwdriver as a stethescope to maybe isolate the noise. Then I would remove the belt and start engine to see if noise is eliminated. Inspect belt grooves carefully and also look at idler pulley and other drive pulleys for any obvious wear. Is your belt original?

Serpentine belt was replaced 2000 miles ago when the water pump and damper were replaced, so it is essentially brand new.

yes and brand new ones will squeel when they settle into place especially if they are not the correct belt.... try some belt anti squeel spray on it and see if it goes away and if so then you need a new belt, a correct one.....
the belt on my 96 contour V-6 was changed over to another numbered belt when the TSB for loss of power steering was done on it few years ago.. the dealer put in a regular belt and it lasted for two weeks before it started making noise.. i brought the car in and showed them the TSB listing the correct belt number. they put one on it and never had a problem with it since..... then 6 yrs. later i needed a new belt.. called all the dealers and gave them the number of my belt and they told me that they have another number on it now.. OK, i dont think it will work but i bite and get it.. so far about 2 months no problem with the belt...hope the redesign is correct on this belt...
I checke auto zone, pep boys, advance auto parts, NAPA and some other parts sites and found that on some of the sites that the belts for the contour have two different measurements on it.. about 1/8 in longer on some belts... wonder if this would be a problem?????? never had to get into that as i got info from ford that the new belt i bought was the replacement for the two older belts that were replaced on my car.....

I had the same problem and still do from time to time after replacing the serpentine belt on my Mystique. It usually goes away, so I'm just living with it. The belt was not OEM and bought at a Pepboys.

If its coming from your serpentine blet area its gotta be the power steering pump. I have the same problem you have and if the engine is somewhat cold and start it up and makes the noise and it goes away after 30 secs. Do you have a leak underneath the power steering pump?? If you do replace it if not its gotta be something else.
