I for one, certainly know that I will not be driving 80+ down the interstate, cutting across 3 lanes of traffic. If I was that stupid, yes, it WOULD be MY FAULT. Who else can you blame? Sure, if I was involved in an accident and hurt or killed, I wouldn't blame "stupid people" or "old people" or "kids". But if I was driving like a maniac, it's the same thing as driving drunk--nobody else is to blame, and I would just be stupid, plain and simple. And yes, I am in control of my own actions, so I know that I won't be doing those things. I certainly don't think that it is good for other people to be killed in accidents in order to "thin the herd," but people have to be expected to be responsible. If they are not responsible enough to wear a seat belt, no one else is to blame.

i'm afraid to respond to topics where people went over 55mph. i'm afraid i'll be banned from CEG again for suggesting that they may have been street racing.

Driving w/o seatbelts is dangerous - no doubt. Driving fast is dangerous and driving slow is dangerous too. Driving is dangerous PERIOD. One could get killed even wearing seatbelts. One can get killed having all them airbags including side impact ones. One can get killed at someone's fault - even if his/her driving skills are impeccable. Young drivers not having enough experience are in a more significant danger. Old drivers lacking necessary coordination skills are in a big danger too.

My entire point was different - working in a trauma center I have to x-ray car accident victims ten times a day, but never ever it occurs to me to blame the drivers themselves for what happened to them. If we don't have compassion seeing 2 underage kids getting killed/injured - I rest my case....

Okay, never doubted you... But that is really sad, parents that cant control their 16 and 17 year olds. Even looking at this legally wise, a minor cant enter into a contract, register a car in their name, etc. So how in the hell did these kids get a hold of a Vette??? -Nick

You cannot legally have a car in your name ONLY...you must have someone over the age of 18 co-sign on the car.

The car is registered in my name but my mother had to co-sign when I bought the vehicle because I was under 18.

So yes they should be able to control them legally because they are under 18, but you never go around thinking, "You know maybe you shouldn't buy this vehicle, I see it splitting in half a few weeks from now."

Things happen, I can honestly say this weekend I was driving faster than that around 1AM (although I wasn't cutting across 3 lanes) and really there is nobody to blame but the driver.

LOL! You sure put it mildly. It's F$%^ing Stupid! Yes you can die with them on but you can also die walking down the street. You greatly increase you odds by wearing one! These two weren't very bright and the parents could have done something. He wouldn't qualify for insurance without his parents help!

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
