I've always let it trip the light, then drive for about 20 more miles. Otherwise, I'd end up filling the tank more than twice per week.

edit: to be honest, my car runs a LOT better when I have less that 1/4 tank. Just seems more powerful. Sounds like the reverse of what other people observe.
