I stopped paying attention to the gauge a while ago. I go strictly by mileage.

For example, I average around 23-24 mpg. So I figure that even with horrible mileage, say, 20 mpg, I'm going to get at least 280 miles out of a tank. So I reset my trip counter each time I get gas, and when it gets to around 240-260 miles _ regardless of what the gauge says _ I fill up again. Sure, there's usually something left in the tank, but I've been told time and time again it's not healthy to let a car's tank get all the way to "E" all the time. And over a long enough time line, you're shelling out the same amount of $ for gas.

I always used to fill up when the gauge said a half a tank. My grandmother always filled up when it said a quarter of a tank. One day on the holiday weekend she forgot to put gas in it and it went to one eighth of a tank and then to E and ran like crap, cel light came on. She took it to the garage and they told her to drive it till the fuel light comes on. That way you keep the bottom of the tank purged from contaminents. If you never let it get down there then the crap builds up. So now I let mine go to E and then go fill up. Just my experience. Thought I would pass it along.
