So I just move back here after living in Washington DC for the past few years and go figure, just after my 3/36 runs out on my 2000 SVT my CEL Comes on, turns out to be the Cat Converters are bad and need replacement but since I live in Mass and we qualify for California emissions instead of getting 8 year 80,000 mi coverage the dealer tells me I only get 3 year 50,000 coverage and since my three years are up I am screwed and out $350 if I decide to do it now and that they can fail me on inspection next year for my CEL comming on.....

if anyone knows of a way to get this fixed without having to pay out of my arse it would be appreciated....I already had to eat a $120 "diagnostic" fee...thanks

Hey Elky,

Here is what I got from the Massachusetts site:

"Extended Emissions Warranties. Vehicles sold in Massachusetts after 1995 carry "California certified" warranties, which cover any defective part for three years/50,000 miles and "high priced" parts for seven years/70,000 miles (in addition to the usual warranty the manufacturer provides). The cost for a "high priced" part is $440 and over. These include items such as the catalyst and the OBD computer itself. Vehicles from out of state may be covered by the more limited "federally certified" warranties, which cover all parts for two years/24,000 miles, and only the catalytic converter and OBD system for eight years/80,000 miles. NOTE: you should check your warranty information carefully since you may have other warranties in addition to those mentioned here."

I am calling my old stealership in Westboro now to see what they say about it but if you have any info on a shop that will do the work it would be appreciated...the stealership that told me that was Waltham Ford...thanks

Also I was told that my car had california emissions...Duddie Ford told me that if 5E212, 5G218, or 5F250 was in the middle of the part number then I should be covered for 7yrs/70K miles....I am calling Waltham to get part numbers and then Duddie wants me to call them back..I will update with info

Just a note, next time you get a CEL, go to Autozone. They will scan the OBD-II for free.

Hey Cobra,

Thanks for the info and yes I did have the code scanned at Autozone and it did come back as the Catalytic converter however I thought I would be covered under the warranty for it (Either my extended ESP or the Federal or State Warranty) and thus would not incur a charge...either that or they would BS me and tell me it was a sensor and charge me a couple of hundred bucks, however because of my ESP I am trying to have the work done at the stealership since I don't want to have them deny claims...

Cats are covered at least 7/70 under California emissions rules.

Be firm with these guys.........

Whatever you do, don't let them touch your O2 sensors - the code points to a cat, then fix the cat. You can play around with the cat monitor sensors yourself. It takes about 30 minutes to change them.

Hey Ed thanks,

For whatever it is worth they keep asking if my car has California emissions and the part they said that needs to be ordered costs about $340 and they said it would be about $400 with install, my guess is that it is a catalytic converter for that much money but I am not 100%, I am waiting for "Bob" to call me back from Waltham Ford since he is the guy who handled my work and conviently he is on lunch...I will post back here after I hear from him with the part number and also after I talk to Duddie/Herb Chambers....This isn't the first time I have had to fight with them over service costs....

I think the Pre-Cats are $900.00 a pop. So changing both of them runs about $1800 just for the parts. Then the labor is about 4 hours so that another $400.00.

I had mine covered under the 7/70 fed. warranty. It was Lamoureux Ford in Brookfield, and they were great.
