Finally stepping up to DSL, need some network advice. I have a plain jane desktop upstairs that I seldom use, and I have a laptop that I use all the time downstairs. What I would like to do is put the DSL modem upstairs with the desktop, and use the laptop wirelessly downstairs. What do I need, and where should I buy it? The desktop does not have to be wireless, but the laptop does. I started reading about wireless b,g,a and end up having more questions than answers. This DSL will be no more than 1.5 mbps so would there be a noticable difference between b(11 mbps) and g (54 mbps)? Help!

Get a Linksys Wireless "G" Router and Network card plug the DSL into the router. Turn off wireless broadcasts and turn on WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocal). You can usually find a bundle on line for 150-200 or BestBuy carries the hardware. It's a good setup. I've been using it for about 6 months. I have no complants.

You can pick up a wireless network card for rhe latptop for $4.99 after rebate at microcenter on Bethel Rd...

Then just add a wireless router and you're good to go.

All you need is a wireless router. Most of them will come with 3-4 wired ports that you would be able to hook your desktop up to.

You will most likely only notice the difference if you are transfering large files between computers on the network because your local speed will still be faster than your DSL speed for either of them.

If there is not that much of a price difference I would go ahead and get the wireless G (54g) becuase everybody seems to be moving away from that other modes right now and with 802.11g you can use 802.11b equipment with it.

If you have cordless phones check when you first get your wireless stuff and make sure they dont cause a problem if your phones are running at 2.4 Ghz.

Aviod Belkin wireless routers for right now. I have had good luck with D-link and Linksys products but I am sure other people have other brands they like.

Are items interchangable between brands as long as they are the same type? Example: Linksys wireless b/g card for laptop with D-Link wireless b/g router? Is there an advantage with matching items(Linksys router + card)? Thanks for all the help so far!

This is what I use and it works very well with pretty good and easy to understand setup instructions.

Nope, should be standard across the board. That's What the "802.11b" and "802.11g" are; a set of standards set by IEEE .
