Is it true that you should wait till snow fall or else the dry pavement will wear the tires down quick?

My rule of thumb is to try not to drive on them when the temp is over 15. I was going to put them on last weekend but didn't get time. Wouldn't you know it I was driving back to London Friday night/morning around 1:30 going through Pickering and there was snow on the ground. Not a big deal if it weren't the first time this year. Since it was though there was no residual salt on the ground. Therefore it turned to sheer ice. Long and short. Snows go on this up and coming weekend.

I would put them on now. You do a lot of driving and weather can change drastically from place to place. This is a very unperdictable time of year. The wear on the tires would be minimal anyway and I personally wouldn't worry about it. Safety first.

I put mine on about 10/25-26 but only because I knew I was leaving town 11/1 and not returning until possibly 11/24 - and I didn't want the KDWs on the car sitting in the same spot for that long -Peter (northern VT, similar climate)

It was posted earlier that snow tires should be run on all 4 corners, how absolute is this rule? I picked up a pair of snow tires, but if it's really unsafe then I'll look into getting a complete set.
