What are your thoughts on them. I ask because I installed a set of Alpine 3 way 6x9's (sorry cant remember the model number, paid $120 if that helps) in the front doors the other day. And I cant say I am too happy with them. I dont think I gained any bass at all, although I could tell a good difference in mids and highs. I have a sony X-plod 50wattx4 head unit, so i figured I would have enough power for them. In my SC T-bird i have Kenwood Excelon 6.5's in the door, running less power to them, plus they are in a bigger car, and they seem crank out more bass than these Alpines.

I suspect you might have an air leak from around the speaker basket. It won't hurt mids and highs, but bass will suffer. Get some 1'x1' pieces of dynamat and install on the door and then reattach the speaker.

If that still doesn't help, you're gonna need an amp. Your HU really puts out about 15x4 rms(continuous) at most. Most manufacturers rate their HU at peak output, which is a fraction of a second filled with clipping, distortion, crap, etc... Basically, it's marketing glitz.

If you're after bass you can really hear and feel, I'm sure you know that you'll need a sub with a dedicated amp.

See the post on "Confused about amps" for some more detailed info on power ratings if you're interested.

I realize that most cd players are rated at peak power. Even so, 50X4 is one of the higher ones that I know of out right now. I think it is around 22watts RMS. The cd player that I said pushes my Excelon 6.5's so well and also a set of 5x7 bostons is a 2 year old Pioneer that is only rated at 35x4. I will check for gaps but I am fairly confident I did a decent job, I have installed several stereos before, but it is possible. I really do not want a sub. My wife drives the SVT 80% of the time and she doesnt want any subs anyway. Maybe my expectations were just to high, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

You have to remember the the 3-ways have to distribute the power 3 ways, and that it takes more watts to push the bigger cone of the speaker for your bass.

I installed alpine 6x9's in my front doors as well, and i noticed a lot more bass then stock, i have a kenwood excelon deck powering them, its not gonna be over powering or anything considering they are only 6x9's and also coaxils base is not nearly as clean as a componet system.

Everywhere I go, I'm told that amplifiers are pretty much a prerequisite to the addition of Alpine speakers... and it's not because they're poor quality speakers; it's because they aren't.
