I have a 95 Cutlass Supreme with the 3.1L that I just bought for the winter... Has 142,000 miles but is clean and runs pretty good... Only problem is with the tranny I believe... At about 50-55mph just driving on the highway, the rpm's are around 1800-2000, but out of nowhere they will just jump up to 3000 rpm's??? The tranny shifts really well all the way through the 4 gears, but it's like it can't hold it's O/D position... Is this the gearing itself or is the torque converter slipping? What does this sound like to everyone here? Thanks in advance

Hmm... Im really not wanting to rebuild this thing... I don't really want to put any money into it so is there anything I can do to keep this from happening for a while? Will changing the fluid and putting something in it help?

I have a 90 Chrysler Fifth Avenue that was having bigtime transmission problems. It would go into neutral everytime it tried to shift to the next gear and reverse didnt work. I added a full can of TRANS-X to it and drove it around and it imeadiately started straighting up. But when the transmission got hot it would barely move. The Trans-X is real thin and then the hot fluid thinned out too much. So for a week I drove it to the store and back and such, short distances so the transmission wouldn't get hot. After a week I drained it and did a fluid and filter change and it has been fine every since.

Maybe I should just change the fluid and add something to it... I don't know what it is really... It's not going from O/D to 3rd gear or anything... It just revs up higher... I thought it went down to 3rd gear for some reason so I figured that if I shifted the gear selector down to 3rd, nothing would happen right? Well it revved up like crazy when I did that so I know it's not going to 3rd gear... Just not sure why it would only rev up 1000 rpms higher

We had an 89 Cutlass Cera and the ATX, really the speedometer speed sensor wiring, had a problem. There was an intermittent in the wiring harness which caused both the speedometer and the TC lockup feature to jump in and out. So cruising down the road at over 45 MPH the TC would go in and out and the RMP's would jump accordingly.
