Ok...lately my car has been making a popping noise upon acceleration or braking. Thought it was the motor mounts, but even after they were replaced, its still doing it. So I'm wondering if its the lower control arm or something else? And how can I check without taking it somewhere???

Could be a CV joint. When exactly is it doing this? Is it only when driving in a straight line?

It doesnt do it when turning. When i go to touch the accelerator, if i start out too fast, it pops just once. Or when i brake too fast. its irritating...

check the sway bar end links. these will make a popping sound when breaking and when accelerating from a stop as well.

Also take a look at the nut that secures the strut hat. Mine was alittle loose on the right front after installing my Roush springs and new struts. Had the same noise.
If you like, we can take a closer look at it this weekend.

I had the stabilizer bushings go bad on me before. Popping was just one of the noises the car made. Otherwise it could be the ball-joint, the strut, strut mount, or as previously stated, the end link, though I have diffuculty with that; in my experience, my car just wallowed around ( 'course it also had a bad tie rod end, too! ). Thinking about it, it sounds like a ball-joint or control arm bushing (ahah! almost forgot that!), but I'd wager on the former. You can get ball-joints separately, but it's usually worth your while to get the whole control arm assembly. You should just be able to jack up the car (with the jack under the arm), take a suitable bar, stick it under the tire and lift up. If the joint is bad, you'll know in a big big hurry.

A couple of years ago, Ford gave a recall for the front springs installing some kind of a retainer. If they weren't installed perfectly, or maybe even if they were, they would make a popping noise; somethinng like the spring shifting in the retainer. You could check it out w/ a dealer to see if the recall was applied to your car. I believe it extended the warranty of the spring if the recall was applied. Forod also has toll free # to check on recalls. You need to give them your VIN. Good luck.

I think it MIGHT be a good idea to check, lol. The last thing i need is to have to figure it out after if breaks, not before. Oh, and we will be comin out Saturday night, phil. Joe will be off by 8, and we'll head out.I'll talk to ya then though. Thanks everyone else for your advice. Its driving me nuts not knowing why it does that. Wanna know whats so bad about it though...all in all it mostly does it just if its wet outside, like the water is making a difference.Go figure! Manda
