My shifter is smacking the gate and not going into 2nd very well.

yes they are adjustable it is best to have ford do it because they have a tool that will align your shifter as they adjust it, dosen't sound like a linkage problem though, you would think that you would have problems in all gears not just second just my .02

Where are they adjusted? When I changed over to a Focus shift tower I noticed that there is some allowable movement in the cable clamps, probably about an inch. Is this where they are adjusted or are they adjusted at the shifter?

Yes, they're adjusted at the shift tower connecters. Mine still aren't right since I switched to the '02 Focus shift tower and I haven't bothered to take it to Ford. Does anyone know another way?
