Alright.. I've searched on this, but haven't found much.. Here's the quick story..

About a week ago, I go to downshift, press the clutch.. don't get much preasure... Tap the clutch pedal a few times, everything is fine.. shift fine. This happens a couple more times on and off, mostly when driving long distances on the highway, when shifting isn't happening much. Felt almost like it was sticking or something and by tapping the pedal it released.

Tonight, go to leave work, clutch pedal to the floor, nothing (no preasure). Start car, can't engage gears. I'm guessing it's a shot clutch. And why not, the engine went at 55,000 why not the clutch at 70,000. Is that pretty much it, becuase last year when I got the engine replaced, the clutch had over 50% left on it according to Terry, and I don't drive the thing hard at all. If not the clutch being totally shot, what could it be?.. if it is the clutch what's the replacement cost, and is it cheaper to get an aftermarket clutch (where from). Any help would be fantastic.

Thanks
Paul

Not sure about a Ford Contour but on a 1992 Ford Pickup a new clutch was $375. One thing check your transmission fluid.

No Pressure:

1. Air bubbles in system
2. Bad slave cylinder in throw out bearing at clutch
3. Bad clutch master cylinder at clutch pedal
4. Leak in line

How are the brakes. On my 95se, the clutch and the brakes share the same fluid reservoir, so if brakes ok probably 2 or 3. If it was number 1 or 3 and sharing same fluid system your brakes would be mucho messed up too!

well.. actually, the e-brake warning light came on.. and it comes on intermitantly now, I thought It was a short, but it started happening about the same time. The brakes seem to be fine, but I don't know if that's a related issue. I just thought It was a short in the ebrake wiring someplace

That light can be from the park brake not being fully released as you already know, but it can also be from low brake fluid.

Check your brake fluid. If it is low, that might be the cause of your clutch problem.

If the brake fluid is low, also check your brake linings. Your brake fluid may be low from worn linings. Check it before you go into the rotors.

Gotta call from the dealer this morning. Looks like a bad slave cylinder. Yippee, they're tearing it apart right now, and are going to let me know if there's anything else starting to go. This isn't a cheap fix, that's for SURE.

Just an update.. the clutch is about 98% shot.. so with the new Clutch Disc, Flywheel, Preasure Plate, Slave cylinder.. labor.. right around $1400.. which is less than the $2,000 i put into the engine last year.. but jesus.. this is one expensive car to keep goin.

If your not under warranty avoid going to the "stealership" for repairs that can be handled by a competent local independent. Some of the computer stuff can be better handled by the dealer, but other stuff, have a napkin handy for your dealer induced nosebleed!

Look on the bright side, your car should handle better after all that excess weight has been removed from your wallet!

And yes, these are expensive cars to run!! Just munched a rod bearing on my 95SE. I feel your pain!!

I'm trying to look at it this way...
New Engine
Rebuilt Transmition
New Clutch..

I think I've gotten most the expensive stuff outta the way for a while
