I use 93 octane. Used to only use BP, but just got my Speedpass for Exxon / Mobil gas (works toward UPromise to help with the kid's college fund). They have 93 octane as well.

I don't get this, but we have 3 Kwik Stars here (same as Kwik Trip), and the 2 non-truck stops have 87,89,93..... the truck stop has 87.5/89.5/93.5. Wouldn't they all get the same gas, being the same station?

I know some places don't get the same gas, I worked at Hyvee Gas a while ago, and we got gas from a distributer that provided us with random types of gas, one day we'd get Amoco, the next day Exxon (we don't even have any Exxons here), next day Phillips 66, etc. Another question would be: I've heard to stick with one brand of gas for best results, wouldn't getting gas at a place like that not be good?

phillips 66 is still in business? i have patches from them and thought they were an old gas and oil company

In Illinois, yes. But Sunaco hasn't been in the Chicago area for 15-20 years, I see their stations only well south of I-80 and in Indiana.

I use the middle grade in my SVTC, but I should keep better track of the actual octane level... As has been noted, sometimes it's 87-89-91, sometimes 89-91-93 or something else entirely depending on things like altitude.

Yeah well dont add 87 to a tank that has 91 in it, get the tank as empty as possible before switching octane ratings.

Aaaah the good old days of leaded gasoline and 120 (RON) octane Aviation gas! Boy did those old FIAT'S fly when that got in to mixture. Granted it was way before plastic entered carburetors! Ford Europe specifies 95 unleaded or higher, for lower (and just as an emergency) there is a plug in the engine compartment that one must pull out to let the EEC know that it has bad fuel coming in. One can get even some 102/106 octane fuel! And I think that higer octane rating gives better burn, cleaner exaust and eventualy more power, because of the higher compression ratio that engine, that wants to burn high octane fuels must have to avoid detonation. I do not even remember when it was last that I saw pump arround here that offered 86/88 gas. And unleaded gasoline in Europe, if sold is 98 octane. The rason for that high octane rating is that most of the engines in Europe used to have much higher compression ratings that the US engines. The situation is different now, the engines are almost the same it is just the different way of rating of the fuel.

Now, where did your hear a thing like that? Mix 91 and 95 octane and you get something like 93 octane. The engine will knock only when the octane is way bellow the recommended level, or if the compression ratio is way up for the same octane level. Modern engines, with EEC'S running the show can retard/advance ignition point in order to meet the fuel octane rating. Up to a point though. Knocking is a spontaneus combustion of mixture that happens before the TBC ( It hink that's right acronim, if not it's the "Upper dead point in our language here) and can result in serious damage to the valves. It occurs when the octane rating is lower that recommneded, or the compression is higer than it should be. So using higher octane fuel will not hurt the engine, nor will mixing it with lower octane fuel, providing it does not go bellow the recommended level.
