I doubt they just hand that information out to the general public but you never know.

I can picture thieves seeing a nice car in a parking lot, writing down the VIN, getting the owners personal info, and swiping the car at a less dangerous time.

Perhaps even someone in a parking lot road rage incident might take a VIN and pay the owner a little visit at their home later on.

Maybe I am a little paranoid.
