Not a big rap fan, but a HUGE hip hop fan.
Check the difference.

don't know about true old school rap since I didn't listen to music back then...
currently I love down south rap...peoples like Three 6 Mafia, Lil Jon & Tha Eastside Boyz, Lil Wayne, & B.G.
those are my favorites.

As I said, 5-10 years ago....not old school. Pre '91 was before my generation.

I didn't mention Wu Tang on purpose. IMHO, they do exceed the limitations of one musical style, or put in other words - they are (were) too good to be put on the same level with ... even Snoop.
Em - dunno, hard to say. I still haven't decided yet whether the kid is for real.
and despite the fact I love listening to rap, all them names as Cool J, Luda, Jah, Lil' Kim, P. Diddy, Jay-Z, etc. - they all look now like they are one performer driving around in Benz, rippin' da clubs apart, with the diamonds hanging like midgets, biatch, MOFO, MOFO, biatch, blah-blah-blah...
I guess NAS and 50 are just more talented. Dr Dre feels kinda out of his time, and Snoop lost a lot of his gift substituting it by Cribs, Bloods and the like...
I am also thinking more and more that maybe this music can't be really felt or understood unless one is a ghetto born and street raised. Correct me if I am wrong.

Some of my favs:
Mos Def
Jurassic Five
Pharcyde
Tribe Called Quest
Dilated Peoples
Wu-Tang
Fugees
Hieroglyphics
Souls of Mischief
Black Star
De La Soul
Mobb Deep
I'm not so much into blang blangin or Escalades on Dubs.. more lyrical precision instead of cheesedick corporate radio-types. Also like old Dre, Warren G, etc.. gangsta shat every now and then.
