The 13B TT was a very reliable engine. It was just not overengineered, particularly in the cooling department. This means it worked well and reliably when run as it was designed. However, too many people tried to alter the design without adding the capacity for those alterations, and the car broke.

I think most rotary enthusiasts would be very offended at the idea of taking a Mazda RX-7 and putting a piston engine in it.

If you want a V8 Mazda, take a Miata and put a Ford 302 in it. This is a popular mod which the enthusiasts insisted remain possible with the 2nd generation.




I would have to disagree somewhat. Yes, many people modified the engine without taking the necessary steps to provide adequate cooling, but I know many people who went through multible engines without so much as adding an air filter to the car. The percentage of warranty claims for stock 3rd gen rx7's were some of the highest for any late model cars. Again, I like rotaries and believe that a 13B turbo can certainly be made reliable without too much effort, but I also like other options.

You're probably right about most rotary ethusiasts being offended at my suggestion, but there is also a whole community of rx7 owners who believe whole-heartedly in conversions. Just a matter of opinion, and I like any car that is fast and fun regardless of the type.

As far as the Miata, there is a company about 20 minutes from me called Monster Motorsports that does those conversions and I like them too.
