No it wouldn't. The cam sprockets will eventually let go if not pinned or welded. 3L hybrid produces as much power and is a better powerplant.
What crack are you on? I have seen stock 4.6L motors put down 225-250 WHP. There is alot of truth to the old addage that there is no replacement for displacement. We are talking a few more cylinders, mind you. The 3.0L is .5L/Cyl and the 4.6L is .575/cyl. Not to mention the boost or compression capabilities. Don't get me wrong, I love our platform, but I'd take that swap in a heart beat. Maybe even a RWD application...

I see there is a reason behind your screen name. In any case, you'd spend waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more trying to make everything work, fit, etc using what you have than buying a 3L duratec motor which is a straight swap. Just think about it, what trasn and axles would you use (our trans won't mate to the SHO motor), how will you fab up the wiring, what engine management system will you use to run it, you're talking thousands of dollars and that hasn't even touch the issue of making it fit!
Being that everyone here has told you the same thing, maybe you should consider that we're all experts to some degree and take our advice with a certain beleif that we're right.
Mods, I see this starting into a flame war if one of you might be so kind as to lock it.
Thanks, Rick

That might be because the V6 version of the Topaz/Tempo was the 3L Vulcan. I may be wrong, but it also may have something to do with the SHO motor fitting...

Ok I'm an idiot. Disregard my 4.6 postings. I had the 3.4 SHO V8 on my brain.

It is all good! I totally understand what you were saying. I used the 4.6L in my example because it is about as outlandish as what was being suggested. I guess if I really want a RWD V8 I could just get the Lincoln LS8.

Just for semi-unrelated curiousity's sake, whats the width of a duratec valve cover to valve cover? And height and length?

I hope you are a regular Michaelangelo on a lathe, then.
I'm a relative idiot when it comes to all the features and pieces that would have to be fabricated, but I'm clarvoiant enough to know that squeezing a 3.0 or 3.2L Yamaha just isn't doable without a boatload of money, time and a DAMN good mechanic with some mad fabrication skills...
I love the 3.0L Yamaha like no other (I've previously owned 2 SHO's); there's no WAY I'd try to squeeze it in a 'Tour, however.
Let me put it this way:
With the money you would have to sink into a project like this and get it done RIGHT, you'd be on your way to a very GENEROUS down payment on a BMW M3...

Sell your 97 and junkyard SHO motor and get a better Ford platform for engine swaps (like a junked out Focus ZX3 or ZX5). I'm not sure if you can get the Yamaha 3.0 and its transaxle to fit in there with those monsterous spider-like heads, but I do know there are a few running around with 4.6L and 5.0L Mustang engines. On top of that, it's not like pulling teeth to try and convert this car to RWD since there's plenty of room for a 5.0 rear-end to mount-up (this car runs AWD on the same platform in Europe).
If you've got the Focus, the wrenches, a small block V8 (and its drivetrain), and enough beer, why not ?

Or you can do as others have said and just spend the $800-1k on a 3.0L Duratec conversion.

This thread isn't going anywhere that any other 3L SHO post hasn't already gone. Dreamers and wannabe machinists can use the search unless they have something new to post.
