I felt a pretty big difference putting my 17s on but I live in NY and we have terrible roads. For next summer i'm gettin rid of my 205-40s and gettin 215-45s.
Would a 225-45 tire work on a 17x7 rim?

No wonder you felt a pretty big difference. 205/40 is a bad size for a 17" wheel. Not enough sidewall and not even as wide as you should really want. Get the 215/45, if you get something else, the speedo is likely to be further off and chances of rubbing increase greatly.

In my own opinion the lower profile tires give the car a sportier feel. I like it far better than the stock tires. Everybody has different tastes like the older cegr's don't prefer the new trends.

Yeah, my 205-40s look much better than any other size(IMO) but since they are soo skinny, I can feel evry bump

thats because you chose a tire that overall, is smaller in diameter then your stock wheel...which is something you should never do. They will not properly distribute the weight of your car, not to mention they wont look as good and your ride will be more harsh.

If you had a Civic, then you'd be okay with 205/40/17...

the smallest you should go is 215/45/17 and you could even fit 225/45/17...whether you rub or not really depends on your wheel offset and the condition of your suspension, it seems to depend on each individuals car whether you rub or not.

:edit: also, how wide your rim is will have an impact on rubbing (ex. if you have a 18x7.5 wheel your chances of rubbing are a little greater than if you had a 18x7 wheel) :edit:

Also, think of ur sidewall choice in terms of this...

18s use 40, 17s 45, 16s 50, and 15s should then be 55...there u go, tough decision made simple

this i find hard to believe. i go from 16 to 17 and back (summer winter) and notice a difference. i notice a night and day difference from my gl (w/ 14s) to the svt w/ 17. its true that your keeping the overall diameter as much as possible BUT that has to do w/ fitment and keeping the speedo accurate as much as possible. the 17s may be almost identical overall to stock 16s or 14s w/ 80 profile tire BUT the ride quality will suffer as u go bigger. it has too. u simply have less tire to absorb impacts. simple as that.

maybe it was your tire choice? or you just pay alot more attention to it then I do...or maybe it is because you switch between the two regularly.

I do know though that the ride was not all that more harsh at all...and the reason I even noticed it was because I expected it. I actually prefer the slight ride change with my 17s over my stock 14s.

I've got 17"s and there was a difference but not very much when I went from 14"s to 17"s. Sure you can notice it, but it's not bad at all, not even close to be uncomfortable. I reckon it also depends on your road quality, suspension, and tires.
