why does DavidZ need to switch front covers if the 2001s have 2.5L FEADs and front covers?

Ok, I understand your confusion. Ignoring the Lincoln LS, Jag engines, and Mazda 6, there are basically 3 different FEAD setups:

1) Early 2.5L with belt tensioner on RH side of front cover. Includes:
1995-2000 2.5L Mondeo, Contour, Mystique, Cougar.

2) Later 2.5L & 3.0L with belt tensioner on LH side of front cover. Includes:
1999-2002 2.5L Mazda MPV
2001+ 2.5L Cougar, Mondeo
2001+ 3.0L Escape, Mondeo ST220, Mazda MPV.

3) All 3.0L Duratec Taurus. No belt grooves on damper. An extra pulley bolts into the front of the damper and drives accessories. This setup probably sits six inches further out from the engine than setups 1 or 2.

David Z is using a 3.0L Escape engine so he needs to convert it from setup #2 to #1.
