Now here's the weird part- My '99 Cougar came stock with the baffled oil pan- So I don't quite understand why those with oiling concerns are panicing over their oil pans not being baffled- Was this a change for '99? Were the oil pans completely open prior to '99?
TIA.

There were changes to the pan (and I believe the way it is baffled) on later Duratecs. From the beginning they all came with some sort of baffling on them, so at no point were they completely open.

Only the 03 Escape has the pan (3M4Z) you want.
All other revisions before that (including the one BAT sells) are the same or not much different then stock. The revision just before the 3M4Z, the 2S7E (02 MY Escape) does have the main drain back channel, but no new baffles or extra surface area grids/ribbing.
This has all been covered several times already if you had but looked!

Not just Escape, Demon. You've got to remember that the oil pan is shared between several different vehicles. When they changed from the 2S7E to the 3M4E pan, it was changed on 2.5L Mondeo as well as 3.0L Mondeo ST220, Escape, and Mazda MPV.

Sorry was thinking "stateside" considering that is the available parts base.
I did forget the MPV though as I did not know for certain it used the same pan. IIRC (now) you had posted this list before...

here, here!
Originally posted by procyon: David, to answer your question, you will need to use your original Contour front cover. The front cover on that Escape has the mounting location for the belt tensioner on the opposite side. The sensor locations are not the issue. (not all 3.0Ls have the same front cover. Some people just have 3.0L Taurus on the brain around here.)
Just FYI, I'm surprised that more people don't use the Escape 3.0L as their donor engine. It even comes with the power steering bracket. Even better would be the 3.0L Mazda MPV which has the bracket, doesn't have the transmission bushing like the Taurus or Escape, and has a DMD installed.
Originally posted by procyon: But the 3.0L Escape, Mondeo ST220, and Mazda MPV all have the familiar "2.5L style" FEAD. In fact, they all share the same front cover with the 2001+ 2.5Ls.
why does DavidZ need to switch front covers if the 2001s have 2.5L FEADs and front covers?

The 3M4Z oil pan will fit any year Duratec in the CDW-27 platform.
The upgraded YL8Z windage tray and pickup will fit any Duratec as long as the 2001+ main studs are also used.

Ok, I understand your confusion. Ignoring the Lincoln LS, Jag engines, and Mazda 6, there are basically 3 different FEAD setups:
1) Early 2.5L with belt tensioner on RH side of front cover. Includes: 1995-2000 2.5L Mondeo, Contour, Mystique, Cougar.
2) Later 2.5L & 3.0L with belt tensioner on LH side of front cover. Includes: 1999-2002 2.5L Mazda MPV 2001+ 2.5L Cougar, Mondeo 2001+ 3.0L Escape, Mondeo ST220, Mazda MPV.
3) All 3.0L Duratec Taurus. No belt grooves on damper. An extra pulley bolts into the front of the damper and drives accessories. This setup probably sits six inches further out from the engine than setups 1 or 2.
David Z is using a 3.0L Escape engine so he needs to convert it from setup #2 to #1.
