We just had an extraordinary example of why these plastic-impellered water pumps should be burned at the stake. Trevor (admin of NECO) was driving his '98 non-SVT to my place on Saturday for the NECO meet, and his water pump impeller shattered on 66. Temp shot through the roof, and the engine went into severe limp mode. Temp was off the scale hot before noticed it and could pull over.
I towed him the rest of the way to my place with my '64 Catalina, and we took his pump out to find the impeller in three pieces, spun right off the spindle.
Curry Auto (NAPA dealer) on Rt. 28 in Manassas has the metal impeller design for $65 and change. We swapped it in, and the engine came back just fine.
I continue to be impressed with these Duratecs... It's one scrappy little motor.
Edit: FYI: His car has 59,xxx miles.
