Nice lookin car! MTX Contour/Mystique/Cougars are harder to find than ATX's. At least in less populated areas. I live in Florida, and work at a Ford Dealer. I have yet to see an MTX Contour come in, and I've been there for a year.

So what if it's auto?
The 2002 was the last Cougar and had a few changes before going away. The steering wheel is from the Euro Mondeo and the headlights were changed.
Mercury dealers didn't order any Manual Cougars, only if someone wanted to make a factory order would the do so.

if you had a corvette, it was an automatic transmission, not an automatic transaxle...ATX=FWD, AT=RWD.

Oh good lord, he was obviously speaking generally about automatic transmissions. You read that somewhere and have been waiting to use it just to make yourself look smart. FWIW, it's too late--we know the truth.

In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.

Because ATX's suck more power than an MTX and they (most of them) are not performance orientated. They change up too soon also.
I have never driven an ATX equipped car I liked, never.
I felt the same way until I had a 2004 Nissan Maxima as a rental car. The at was very nice.
contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!
