there are 2 of them, one for the ECU (the one pointing up)
and the one driving the gauge (pointing down).

I'd tap the thermostat housing / sensor and reconnect the
wires to sort out contact problems - if it doesn't help, a
new sender is cca. $20 and easy to replace.

One could jumper out the two leads on the connector to the LOWER temp sending unit (see above) and the needle should shoot over to the extreme right side of the guage when switched on at ignition key. If needle doesn't respond, problem is most likely in the temp sending unit itself.
