No I think that "fear" you talk about is more like how we are supposedly going to hell if we are bad, so you must go to sunday Church to 'be good'. Armaggedon is used by most religions to instill this fear of hell too. If anything it is a descriptive word of what is going to happen to the wicked-Dan 2:44. As Rev 16:14,16 says it is the 'day' when God will wage war against wicked ppl. I agree with the Bible's view on that it won't be a nuclear or man-made holocaust, for ps 37:29 mentions, righteous possessing earth forever (so how would that be possible if we extinct ourselves with Bombs).
As to having an "eventual demise" where would we be if Adam and Eve didn't sin? God's will (Gen 1:28) for the earth hasn't changed. Armaggedon simply gets us back to where God intended, on a Perfect earth w/o wickedness.
