Just wondering what material is recommended for component templates. I am planning on using 1/4" masonite. Also, should there be an airtight seal between the speaker and the template as well as between the template and the door? One more thing...anyone fit a tweeter and 6.5" in the same template.

Anything dense will work, (plywood, particle board), so masonite should be ok. Yes, make it all as airtight as possible. Air leaks will cause your bass response to suffer.

I used 1/4 Masonite and put a layer of dynamat on top just for the heck of it. Worked great, fit 5.25 and the tweet. A 6.5 may fit, I really dont remember how much room there was. I do know that depth was a concern (I used MB Quart, they are deep)

I also used masonite for the templates and was able to fit in 6.5's. I haven't done anything to seal the template yet but bass response is good. I'll probably try sealing it soon to see if there's a noticeable difference.

6.5s will fit. I just finished installing a pair of 6.5 Jensens today. They even came with a template to fit them to the 6x8 openings in the doors. I dont think there is enough room for a tweeter, though. Dont laugh at the Jensen name. They sound a hell of a lot better than the Kenwood 6x8s that were in the doors before!

I used 1/4 plywood on my sister's and 1/2 particle board on mine. Both were 5 1/4's

I used something called 'hard-board' from home depot. Basically the same kind of wood as used for peg board only...without the holes. I've made templates for all four doors TWICE with this stuff and I like it a lot. First they held 6.5 freeair subs and now hold a 6.5" component set.

I used some 1/4" Luan which is linoleum floor underlayment that I had lying around. 6.5" components. I don't know if the tweeter would have also fit.
