If mj had been legal from the start would our society be in a worse or better position? Who knows, but just consider adding on the statistical avg of deaths and collateral costs associated with the current legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco and make the decision for yourself.
Even if it was legalized there would be no denying that it would just add on to the number of deaths, and costs that comes with drug use of any kind. No matter how you cut it people are going to break the law no matter how high the bar is set. They've made liqour legal but look at all the DUIs. People will drive high, drunk, or medicated no matter what the law says. Why make it easier.
Personally I don't care what people drink or smoke. If you like mary j then more power to you, put one in the air for me and throw on some Bob Marley. All I'm saying is I don't think it should be legalized or decriminalized because in the end it will cause more harm than good.

What I am saying here is that morals could be hardly applied to Mary Jay - morals of our society are mostly traditional and largely based on Old/New Testament - nothing there mentions Mary Jay. Now, if we apply the term "moral" to laws, regulations or ordinances - then how is doing 120 is any better than puffin' da joint?
I've never done 120mph and if you're saying it's against morals, than so be it. I didn't say I use morals.
Morals can be applied to this topic, did you read my post after that? I said morals relating to making weed legal just because alcohol is legal. You can't just skim the posts.

It was actually the other way around. Cigarettes and alcohol were LEGAL to start with when this country was first established back in 1776. Pot was too for that matter. But the government's motivations for regulating the people have a lot to do with money. Why do you think our economy is so strong in USA? Think real hard and try to see if you can figure out the REAL reasons. Our government knows from research that pot makes most people lose motivation. Most is not all, but it means majority (they know the exact statistics). But frankly put, if you legalized pot, and let a few generations go by, and it became mainstream to the majority of people, then you'd see our profits, economy and business go down the tubes. And evenually, the goverment would see less income from taxes. And then our national defense would weaken, due to lack of funds for scientific and technological advances in military developement. Then, since we are the most envied country in the world, Everyone else would have a better chance at taking us down. So, going with the theme that the government wants us to stay alert, be motivated, start businesses, invent things (and actually have the motivation and follow-through to really produce those inventions we think of), you can clearly see why the government offers obvious tax breaks for business owners, inventers, farmers, and anyone else who is motivated and participating in the benefit of our national and world economy and making the American dollar stronger and most powerful in the world. If everyone was a stoner in the country, do you think that we would be able to maintain this continued strength after 3-4 or 5 generations? Granted, alcohol has it's problems too (as I quit drinking even, about 4 years ago as well), but at least most people still get up in the morning and still want to go out and work if they got a little hangover. Plus, alcohol is considered a substance that when used in moderation, can be used in formal environments and keep the life there at the party without making everyone get to 'out there' (away from talking business). But the government I'm sure, just assume wish they could outlaw alcohol too, if they knew it would really help the economy, but they wont, because they run all the Liquor stores in many states and get a lot of tax from beer and liquor, so it has proven to be very profitable for them. Just remember that the US government is the top business in the world and they are trying to succeed under it, and they have the power to do anything that will help that main business to be the best in the world.
I used to smoke pot for years (since I was 12 to 25), so I know all about it. I also know that it wasn't until I quit 5 years ago that I SLOWLY, progressively started to really see what it had been doing to me all those years. While I puffed weed chronically, I never made more than $20,000 per year, and I was content making that. Keyword: CONTENT. When I quit puffing the magic cloud, from that point on in my life, I slowly started becoming more bored of just fooling around and wasting time, and started becoming less and less 'content' with my annual income. Since that time, I've used that pissoff time and figured out how to make more and more money every year, and now I make more money than I've ever made in my whole life! Now, I'm becoming less and less content with being a mechanic working for somebody else, so I'm working on a plan to be my own boss someday, so I too, can recieve all those tax breaks that the government offers business owners. If I was still in the bong, I wouldn't even dream that this would have been a possibility for me. I never would have had the faith in myself. And I am a diagnosed ADD person too. I took Ritalin from when I was 12 to 20, and today, I don't take anything for it, I just deal with my problems like God intended and no longer try to look for some miracle drug that can fix me. I can fix any problem with myself just by workin things out in my mind. No drugs. The worst thing I was ever told in my life was that I had ADD. I wished they really wouldn't have told me that ever. Anyways, sorry to ramble, but I just was trying to share my viewpoint on why pot REALLY isn't legal anymore in US. It's all about money, and future economy, and the direction it could send this country into the future.

When you smoke you are relaxed and passive. When people say it is a gateway its because they have never tried it. There are a million and a halfreason people move to harder stuff, you cant blame that on pot. I know tons of people that smoke and never go onto harder stuff. Like i said before think for yourself and dont let others think for you.
I think it will be Legal soon, you can see all the trouble it costs being illegal, not to mention people are begining to realize its potential.
Matt
That above, proves my point about the government. He sais it up there the best, that, "When you smoke you are RELAXED and PASSIVE." The government DOESN'T want a passive society! They want people who are motivated to go out in the world, travel around, make businesses and companies, and make them grow to become huge corporations! They want us to increase the value of our dollar, so we will keep our economic strength high. Don't we all want that? So we can keep all our toys, and homes, and cars, and all that other stuff that we take for granted?

Could they really regulate the potency? I dunno...
Lots of thoughts going through my head so this comment isnt too focused
Last spring, I spent some time in Amsterdam, where pot, among many other things, was legal. There was a limit to how much you could buy (5 grams) so it could pretty much stay regulated. {The old limit was 30!} Contrary to common stereotypes, it was not a bunch of stoners running around or people tripping balls on every corner. In fact, many locals simply stayed away from it or rarely used any narcotics. As a society, I could not really tell a difference in every day living of the people there from any other European metropolis. Unfortunately, I do not believe that it could workin the US any way close to the way it works there. It may be like letting a kid loose in a candy store in most cases, due to lack of moderation and parental influence. My view of it is that if you are handling your business, its all gravy. If not, its time to stop!

True Josh, that's the cornerstone or maybe one of 'em. Pot and chase after income do not fit together. The thing is that more and more ppl are gettin' tired of chasin' after money with the sole purpose to retire to FL and play golf for the rest of their golden years. That's probably why our country is the biggest drug consumer in the entire world - the tension and the never ending marathon after money and "stuff." Again, I don't smoke weed - not even occasionally - not anymore - but I am saying we got 2 diff approaches to life here....

But could you somehow agree that the government DOES want us to chase after money and get rich, etc.? They could care less if we live stress filled lives, if it means better economy. That's all the biggest business in the world (US government) really cares about. That's why I don't think they would ever re-legalize it ever again. Course you never know what will happen in the future after all the old farts of last generation in office die, and if closet stoners become politicians and get in office and convince the people to allow it's legalization into the future?

Ooops. Missed your point b4. Of course, it will never legalize it.
I recall the article in "Car and Driver" a coupla years ago. Despite not having speed limit on autobahns in Germany, the death toll (official statistics) there doesn't exceed ours, but is actually lower. My point? Please prove me (not you, the Government) that pot is really harmful or that anti-drug war reults in a more stable, more safe and more moral society. I doubt that.
Again and again. I am not advocating drug neither do I condemn its use. In my personal life I don't have room for them. BUT... turning the entire nation into one big crowd of controllable and heavily obedient working units by feedin' us pile after pile of horseshite is not exactly what this country was about. Well, not in my opinion.

That brings up an interesting(yet scarey) thought. Look at this post. I would say that nearly 95% of the poster agreed that it should be legalized(I didn't ). However lets just say our boards are a little on the Liberal side and say that %75(probably more) of all American people between the ages of 15-25 agree that it should be legalized. 20 to 25 years down the road those people become our Congress people. Now thats one of the scariest things I can think of Of course some of them may actually grow up in that stretch and realize how stupid it all is. There may still be hope.
