The topic is being covered on the national level, so I do hope I don't break Lance's guidelines.
So, should MJ be legalized? What's your opinion?

Agreed. There are many useful purposes for MJ. My best friend is a smoker, but it is the only thing that helps him deal with his severe ADHD. Not even "fine" prescription drugs like Adderol or Ritalin help is his case, they just make him an unbearable [censored]. Among others, glaucoma patients, those who suffer from severe stomach ailments, etc...
It's not for everyone, but isn't that the same with alcohol, tobacco, etc... And those two don't even serve any medcinal purposes at all. (take away the old adage, "glass of wine per day helps the heart)
Also, it's good for getting really stoned and chilling a whole lot!

I think pot is better than alcohol because people have much more control when they are high as opposed to being drunk. Plus you don't get hangovers and the buzz is gone after a couple hours. However, I used to be a heavy pot user, and after doing that for a long time, I started experimenting with other drugs like shrooms, acid and meth. This was about 2.5 years ago, and I was completely f*cking my life over. Staying up for a week straight while on crank is one of the most awful things you can put your body through.
Finally, one night I got way too f*cked up. I ate an eighth of shrooms, smoked about a 20-sack of pot and drank two forties. I was having the most intense hallucinations and visuals and was sh*tting my pants out of fear.
The next morning, I was incredibly depressed. I hated what I was doing to myself. I felt terrible for doing all this stuff behind my mom's back, and knew she would be heart broken if she knew what I had become. I've smoked pot a couple of times since then, and haven't touched any other drug. I'm completely clean now, and thankfully, I'm still alive, not in prison, and my brain still fully functions.
So my point is, pot is fun. It seems harmless, and I know a lot of people that can still function on it. But it really is a gateway drug, and the reason I think it should still be illegal is to protect people from themselves.
When you're on drugs, you fall in to a completely different world. But after awhile, you get so caught up in this false reality, that you become completely out of touch with the real world. If you're lucky, you can see how it destroys your life and get out of it before it's too late.
So I'm going to vote for "pot should NOT be legal for recreational use". If you've never done it, don't. It's not worth it. Don't risk ruining your life. I think it could have benificial medical purposes, but that's it.
I still drink, and I'm working on cutting back, but alcohol is a walk in the park compared to what I've done. I'm also a full-time college student and have a very good office job now, but only because I quit doing drugs.
It all started with pot.

Very well said.
I would vote to legalize, but it isn't for everyone. I like what Canada has done, just made it a ticketable offense.

100% agree. I know, I know, I am taking Mike's words out of context, but since it's an automobile Forum - come and think of it - despite all TV commercials we know that you are more than cautious when driving on pot than on alcohol. Doing 35 an hour is probably not the best way to drive, but it's def better than speeding 140 (not for Zetecs ) while drunk.
Now, "it all started with pot" thing. Well. How about diff cultures - like Jamaican ppl - they smoke like hell but rarely use any hard drugz - as a whole. Now, how about that:
1. Graduated high school first in class
2. Graduated Harvard - 4.0 GPA
3. Worked in Enron for 15 years
4. Lost his job
5. Lost his investements
6. Stole a pack of condoms at Wall Mart
Conclusion: it all started with Harvard. Harvard should be shut down.
I am not out here to advocate pot, but my point is: I can fully support ppl who oppose pot - BUT - only if they don't use alcohol. Cops who are getting their arses drunk after hours have no MORAL right to arrest kids for smoking a joint... Just my opinion.

There's two things to take into account here:
1> "Hard drugz" are not nearly as easy to come by in Jamaica as they are here. Anyone can grow their own pot for next to nothing, but not many in Jamaica have the means to produce heroin and far fewer have enough money to actually buy it. That is not the case here where every 5 year old has lots of spare cash.
2> As you said, they are a "different culture" and as such, they have a different respect for marijuana. It is the same in other countries with a low or non-existent drinking age. The concept of people abusing marijuana in Jamaica is as foreign as drunk kids roaming the streets of Rome.
Every culture is different, and we most definently are not a culture of moderation. If we like it, we do it a LOT. If someoen says "Don't do that so much", we do it more to spite them.
I dont think legalizing marijuana is a bad thing, we just have some cultural issues to resolve first.

Its a gateway drug, pure and simple. Countless studies have proven this.
If we legalize MJ, whats next?
