You know, I had the privledge of having the VP of BMW North America (i think, either that or the Michigan area...) in my van at the Resort where I drive (shuttle vans etc.) and we discussed the rear end styling on the 7 and now 5 series. he explained to me how the reason for the styling is actually aerodynamics. the trunk lid area has a sort of spoiler integrated into it, if you look at it right you can actually tell it almost looks like an old Porsche whale tail grafted in smooth. he admitted he didn't like it a lot at first either but it's grown on him and I have to say I agree. Now if we could only redo the side profile of the Z4.....
