It can. I've heard of such case.... some 8yr old kid
managed to start it with the key left inside and hit the
ditch (fortunately). They could've hit anything else instead.

Just telling a fact.

The officer will probably receive a written reprimand. This was a dumb mistake, you are right. He did in fact call his supervisor and tell him of his error, this took balls. I know an officer that had a city owned Glock 27(baby glock)stolen from their vehicle while on vacation, and they received a written reprimand.Let's hope some good samaritan finds and returns the gun,and no one is harmed from this mistake.

I think he and all his co-workers will learn from it and he shouldn't be fired. I know cops that haven't been fired when they've been involved in worse things like suspected drug use/dealing and alledged DUI, neither case could be proven so they kept their jobs, but their names have been tarnished, which is enough punishment. Now a serious mistake is the sheriff's deputy working security at my job reading a play boy mag while working . This is at a family place, so he got fired.

You can't sue the government unless they allow you to. There is a law that gives them protection

I didn't say the cop should be killed. I said they should be relieved of their duties bottom line. If anyone makes that big an error on their job they should be fired. It doesn't just stop at cops. Say you work at a bank and you left the vault open overnight and someone steals $50,000. Would you derserve to keep your job? I don't think so. The cop lost their firearm through sheer carelessness. Who says that's a good cop? That is a MAJOR issue in my opinion. Some mistakes are terminable offenses and in my book that constitutes one of them.

If I was a cop and knew that your logic was going to be applied to me I would be a lot more likely to stage a break in and make it look like my gun was stolen.

It's called Sovereign Immunity, and it's been waived to a limited extent by all States and the Federal Government. If I were shot by that cop's gun, you can bet your booties I'd sue.

Why? Because youre a greedy [censored] who wants to contribute to the continuation of our lawsuit society? He left it on his car by accident , he didnt give it to a criminal. Attitudes like yours are the reason that bumbling idiots win millions for spilling hot coffe in their laps.

What happens if I leave my car keys lying around, and someone finds them, takes my car, and gets involved in a hit and run resulting in death? Should I be sentenced for losing my keys?

Serious mistake, yes, but not enough to fire the cop on a first offence. He should be repremanded and encouraged to take better care of his "tools". After all, his gun is just a tool he uses to do his job.

If someone wanted to commit a crime, they would do so regardless of whether or not they find a gun lying on the ground.

There is a huge difference between a set of keys and a loaded handgun.
Should he be fired? No. But this is a mistake that should NOT have happened in the first place.

Well, actually I do want to contribute to the contiuation of our lawsuit society. I'm a personal injury lawyer.

It's because he left it on his car that it's called "negligence" and not an intentional act. If I accidentially forget to stop and run you over, would it matter to you that I didn't mean to do it?

I won't go into the McDonalds lady other than to say that she deserved every penny.
