simply put, torque is what gets you moving and then horsepower takes over. for max acceleration you have to have both. the broader the torque and horsepower the quicker and faster you will be. if the powerband is too peaky it will hav a negative effect. take a race engine for instance with alot of valve overlap, it will make more peak power but the whole area under the curve will suffer. that is what different gear ratio's do put you in the meat of your power. you can make it hard to understand or just keep it simply.

As soon as you start moving the wrench with your 100 ft/lbs of torque, you now develop HP. The faster you turn with that wrench with the 100 FT/lbs, the more HP you are developing. SO, peak HP is the point where the AVAILABLE torque from the engine (Which varies because of too many things to go into) and the speed the engine is turning is optimum.

Thats good stuff right there.
I always knew that HP was a function of torque, but thats a really good summary, thanks contouraholic.

In other words, max hp is where the engine is producing torque at the maximum rate. Max torque is the maximum rotational force produced by the engine. As the engine cycles faster, hp increases (in general) because there are more force producing explosions per second.
