simply put, torque is what gets you moving and then horsepower takes over. for max acceleration you have to have both. the broader the torque and horsepower the quicker and faster you will be. if the powerband is too peaky it will hav a negative effect. take a race engine for instance with alot of valve overlap, it will make more peak power but the whole area under the curve will suffer. that is what different gear ratio's do put you in the meat of your power. you can make it hard to understand or just keep it simply.
