I disagree, most of the HTs I have heard that use small speakers lack the midbass that I would want.

Bingo. This is the EXACT poblem I'm having now, combined with shoddy acoustics due to the listening environment that I have. I didn't run out and get the cheapest set I could find, either. Polk has a good lineup and their RM7600 is their flagship HT offering, in terms of a packaged satellite system. They do sound damn good, but not GREAT!

You just can't fight the fact that nothing puts out midrange better than a well-built, sizeable speaker enclosure. There's not a satellite system out there today that handles midrange they way it should be heard...

If I was to do things all over again, I'd be purchasing seperates (i.e., good-sized towers, a large center channel and bipole/dipole suround sound speakers).
