Focus your speaker money on front speakers and center channel. The rears are not used that often. basicly any bookshelf speaker will do. I recommend tower speakers As for the subwoofer, If you have the ability, BUILD YOUR OWN!! I'll even design and send you specs if you'd like. I built mine and tested it at a local audio shop where a friend works. Blew everything (Including every Bose sub) away except for a JBL HT series..

Okay, just to clarify to you guys: I like Bose a lot. Sue me. I am not saying that they are the best quality in the world yada yada, better than all, best for the money, I simply gave the suggestion to the man that I think they are great speakers. Seeing that he is on a budget, I should have suggested otherwise. I am fully aware of such brands as Cambridge, Klipsch, etc, but I found those to be just as pricey (the models I am thinking of). Anywho, just wanted to clear up that I do know that Bose is overpriced and there are other brands just as good or cheaper that match or exceed Bose quality. I for one, am with Bose. (although I'd settle for anything that sounded good to me)

ok - so my setup at home is the following: Denon AVR-1803 5.1 setup JBL S-38II Fronts JBL S-CenterII Center JBL N24 Rears (just coulndn't go with the 17" S26s) Sony SA-WM40 subwoofer Panasonic 36" Tube (800 lines res) non-HDTV APEX AD-660 DVD (bleh! but it plays everything!) DishNetwork 510 PVR Overall, I'm rather pleased with the setup... My room is EXTREMELY open unfortunately, 20 ft high vaulted ceiling, about 18x40 Surprisingly, the setup still scares the hell out of my cat during big scenes so I'm pretty happy with it...

I'm not gonna read all the posts. Just make sure you get seperate components for everything.Receiver/amp, dvd/mp3 player, cd changer if ya want, and speakers. I would buy the speakers as a set cause in surround systems sattalite size matters little when you got a good Powered sub.

I disagree, most of the HTs I have heard that use small speakers lack the midbass that I would want.

Bingo. This is the EXACT poblem I'm having now, combined with shoddy acoustics due to the listening environment that I have. I didn't run out and get the cheapest set I could find, either. Polk has a good lineup and their RM7600 is their flagship HT offering, in terms of a packaged satellite system. They do sound damn good, but not GREAT!
You just can't fight the fact that nothing puts out midrange better than a well-built, sizeable speaker enclosure. There's not a satellite system out there today that handles midrange they way it should be heard...
If I was to do things all over again, I'd be purchasing seperates (i.e., good-sized towers, a large center channel and bipole/dipole suround sound speakers).
