It 'purges' the nitrous system of anything. It's not necessary, but a great preventative measure. If there's something in the lines it could mean disaster, and with the purge valve it makes sure if there is, whatever 'it' is, is pushed out.

Not only is it good so that you "flush" the lines, it means a fresh supply of NO2 goes to the nozzles.

That's neat. I still think my favorite purge setup was in a Trans-Am WS6 with the purge coming out the Ram Air ducts in the front. That [censored] looked like a freakin' dragon.
