It would be helpful to know how many miles these Contours (and Mystiques) can rack up before they die or need major surgery.
Therefore, it would be informative for all of us if Forum members would post the following:
1) Year, model, engine type, and tranny type
2) Mileage on odometer.
3) Major repairs (motor overhaul or tranny rebuild and mileage when these repairs were needed).
4) Note on how well-maintained your vehicle was (or wasn't).
Thanks! JH

Since I started this thread, I'll go first:
1) Year, model, engine type, and tranny type\
'95 Contour GL 2.0 liter Four auto tranny
2) Mileage on odometer.
162,500 miles
3) Major repairs (motor overhaul or tranny rebuild and mileage when these repairs were needed).
None
4) Note on how well-maintained your vehicle was (or wasn't).
I bought this car from my bro-in-law who maintained it pretty well with regular fluid changes (including tranny). In the various receipts I don't see anything more serious done outside of brake jobs, timing belt replacement, and a coil spring or two replacement. Motor and are tranny original (fingers crossed).
Sorry if my signature is a bit redundant.

Zippy: 250k gives me HOPE. Thanks!
======
My friend also has a Contour:
1) Year, model, engine type, and tranny type
'98 Contour (pretty gold car) 2.0 Four auto
2) Mileage on odometer.
100,000 miles
3) Major repairs (motor overhaul or tranny rebuild and mileage when these repairs were needed).
Total tranny failure at 100,000 miles
4) Note on how well-maintained your vehicle was (or wasn't).
She bought the car used about 17,000 miles ago (1 year) from local Ford dealer and has no idea of its history. Car was very clean and in like-new external condition. She is a little old lady and did not abuse this vehicle. Tranny just suddenly failed at 100,000 miles under ordinary driving conditions. Cost of replacement: $2500.

No major engine work. (knock on wood)
Small component & general failures - IAC, IMRC vacuum solenoid, blocked EGR passages, springs, tie-rods, brakes, buggered O2 sensors....
But those are wear & tear items....

Well I have a high mileage Contour.
1) Year, model, engine type, and tranny type\
1998 SVT Contour (I purchased it new in July/1999 - Demo had less than 5,000 k on it)
2) Mileage on odometer.
253,000 Kilometres
3) Major repairs
Nothing major that I can recall just the water pump (surprise surprise)
4) My car is very well maintained. I drive it all year round. I have done regular maintenance, plugs, wires, brakes etc. Most problems that I have had have been items which just wear out and need replacing.
I plan on keeping this car for a lot longer. By this time next year I should be at about 300,000 K.

Zippy:
Is the Zetec motor the standard 2.0 liter four banger?
What is the reason you change plugs every 10K?
My car idles badly and I'm looking for a cheap fix....
What plugs do you use?
Seems to me I read a plug thread somewhere saying that the wrong plugs can lead to poor idling. I haven't checked yet what plugs are in my car, but that's one thing I'm leaning towards trying for a cheap fix....
