Ok, here are a couple of things I am unsure of.

1. - When I first start the car, there is a funny noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a pulley lacking lubrication. (Or a wagon wheel lacking lubrication? - a low pitch squealing kind of noise) After a few seconds, it smoothes itself out and doesn't reappear for the whole duration of my trip. It only does it after start-up.

2. - Is it normal for the A/C compressor clutch to engage when I put the switch to defrost? When I do so, it engages but then it disengages and then re-engages over and over. When I put the switch to A/C or MAX A/C, the clutch stays engaged and doesn't disengage until I turn off the A/C.

Any help on these topics would be greatly appreciated,

I have a similar problem, although it has only cropped up twice, and it was VERY loud. Probably not related to your problem, but if you find a solution I'd be curious to hear. I think, though I'm not sure, that its coming from either the power steering pump or the alternator. I'm waiting for whatever it is to finally quit working. Since yours is very consistent, try this: take off the serp. belt and start the engine. If the noise disappears the problem is with one of your accessories (alternator, power steering pump, or A/C).

Yes, this is perfectly normal. The A/C is used to dry the air.

UMMM the sound you hear at start up might be your starter. Mine is horribly loud right now and needs replacement asap. Otherwise I;d check your main serpentine belt and look for cracks and cuts, it might be getting dry rotted. I suspect the starter though because it only does it at start up.

1. Most likely a belt. Try rubbing a bar of soap on the back of the main belt while its running. See if that helps.

Is it a rattle on start-up? Do you have a timing chain? You might want to check this in the FAQ section.... this is normal and nothing to be worried about, so Ford tells us.

Mine did the same thing, then the starter plunked...Maybe a coincidence, but perhaps something to look into...

1. Most likely the belt tensioner.
2. Yes. AC is run to help control humidity.
