I picked up a code reader from Checker Auto. I cannot find the plug on the car to attach it to. I have the Contour Shop Manual but it only refers to the New Generation Star Tester (NGS) The manual states: "If using a generic scan tool, refer to the Powertrain Control/Emission diagnosis manual." I can't find this connector plug in the engine compartment. I did find a connector under the dash but the adapter that is labled FORD does not fit in the female side. The multi-brand diagnostic tool says the adapter will fit the 96. (if i can find it.)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you truly have a 96+ and an obd2 scan tool, then you connect it under the driver's dash, near the fuse box but closer to you.

If your tester comes with branded adapters it probably isn't an OBD-II and won't work with your '96.

Well it is an OBD II scanner. I took it back because none of the adapters fit. On my way back to return the scanner to Checker, I stopped at AutoZone and the salesman came out to my car, plugged in the OBD (his own) and found one code stating "Misfire in cylinder 4". About 4 mos ago, I replaced the wires with Ford Racing wires, and the ignition coil was replaced with an ACCEL coil. The car was running better than it ever ran. Now this????

I figured that meant wires, coil or fuel injector. I purchased the cheapest first: another set of wires. I can't believe it could be the coil again, but that is the next cheapest. Then I will bite the bullet and pop for 4 new injectors at $50.00 @
