Why would that be a problem? I was careful in modifying the pickup tube as to not alter it's height in the pan.

2. I'm not saying it can not be physically done, but you are taking a risk it will stay in it's newly bent state.
If you took lots of measurements of the original placement you may be able to get it pretty close.
Remember even turning up one corner can cause it to suck in air.
...or you could pay $15 for the revised pickup and be safe.
