On another note, some carbureted cars suffered from excessive heat on the carburetor , causing the fuel to boil in the carb. The phenolic spacer insulated it from the heat. But on other cars, the lack of heat allowed the carb to freeze up under certain conditions. The insulated spacer helped if you had a heat problem and hurt if you didn't.
