This has been proven by several people on this site, using oil analysis at intervals up to 7500 miles.
These Guys at Paradise Garage just went 18,000 miles on a single fill of Mobil 1, and it's not even designed for extended drain intervals. They're going to try Amsoil next, so they should see some really high mileage with that one.
I have followed the car manufacturer's interval on every car I've owned since 1990. On my old Honda, that meant 7500 miles, and on this car, 5,000. And that's with dino oil. I use synthetic now, and I feel even better about going 5k.
The 3k interval is mostly outdated "wives tale" stuff that we learned from our dads. It made sense on my 69 Beetle, but it doesn't make sense on a modern car, especially with synthetic oil and quality filtration.
Function before fashion.
