Bought this 98 GL ATX at 85K and love it. Uses no oil, runs great! (90K now) I can not find out what oil the previous owner used. I have been using dino oil. Should I or should I not switch to a synthetic. What would the pros and cons be? I have been told if you switch to Synthetic you should NEVER go back to dino oil,(RUINS SEALS). How true is this??

He probably has a zetec, do NOT use a motorcraft 810 filter unless you have a duratec. I switched to mobil1 at ~83k miles with no problems.

Don't use an 810s filter for EITHER engine.
Stock Duratec filter is an FL-820S.
The filter I recommend is a K&N HP-2010. If it were a Duratec...

I would recommend some zetec filters, but I believe the 98+ may be different from pre98s.

its only bad for old cars with high mileage, to switch to synthetic. i used to believe this as well. i was straightned out of that thaught quite fast, you should have no problem. my brother has a 91 plymouth acclaim, 76 Nova, and 85 'maro......uses Mobil 1 all the time. no damage, or leaks yet.

I have a '97 Zetec, switched to synth at cca. 120k now has 155k, no problems, no oil consumption.
Before that I was strict on changing oil on every 3k miles, when gone synthetic I changed first after 2k then 3k, after that 5k. The last 2 times I used synth blend because I think it's good enough - when I drained it after 5k it was still in very good condition.
