FWIW, I got that code when I was still under the 70K warranty. Thought about swapping the O2 sensor to see if that was the problem, but said screw it since it was still under warranty. Took it to the dealer, they replaced the cat. No mention of O2 sensor replacement or anything.

Got a P0420 today. Dealer says it's covered 8/80.

Found the text of TSB 01-9-7 which says, in part:

Do not replace downstream HO2S sensors (HO2S12/HO2S22) for DTCs P0420 and/or P0430: When diagnosing a vehicle with a customer concern of MIL On and DTCs P0420/P0430 in continuous memory, do not replace the downstream HO2S sensors (HO2S12/HO2S22). Damaged or malfunctioning downstream HO2S sensors will not cause these DTCs to be set. Always verify the vehicle concern, then perform the pinpoint diagnostics in the appropriate PC/ED Service Manual.

no you dont clean it with a torch.. you test it with a torch... download this link, the manual for a multimeter by this company.. i shows you how to test the sensors....
go to www.actron.com and download their manuals for the test equipment and you will see how to test it with a multimeter( a plain old voltage/ohm meter)....
